Thomas Anders (born Bernd Weidung, 1 March 1963, in Koblenz, Germany) is a German singer, composer and record producer. His parents are Helga and Peter Weidung. He has one brother (Achim) and one sister (Tania). He was married to Nora Balling from 1985 to 1999. Since July 2000 he has been married to Claudia Hess, with whom he has a son, Alexander Mick, (born June 27, 2002).

Even as a child, Thomas was more an aesthete than an athlete. So he preferred music instead of soccer. His debut on stage was at the age 7 at a St. Nicholas' Day Party, where he sang Christmas carols. From that day on he knew: " I'm going to be a singer". The neighbors were able to see the birth of his career: The house boomed when Thomas turned on his cassette recorder, singing duets with Barry Manilow.

He took piano lessons and later he even changed schools to take music as special subject. This is how he came to Koblenz, where he is still living today. After he had passed his education, he signed up at the university of Mainz to study German Studies, Journalism and Musicology. By this time he had already performed in several clubs and discotheques.

In his Modern Talking days, he used to wear a big necklace with the name "Nora". This was caused by his possessive then-wife (so the fans would know that he was not single).

Anders was the lead singer of Germany's popular pop-duo Modern Talking, which was produced by Dieter Bohlen in 1984-1987 and in 1998-2003.

 pre-Modern Talking era (1980-1984)

Thomas Anders began showing interest in music as a child, he did his first stage-performance at age of 7. Anders first studied music at Koblenz Eichendorff-Gymnasium. After having performed at several clubs and discotheques, in 1979, he participated in a music contest organized by the radio station Radio Luxembourg which he walked away from without earning enough points. Two days after the contest, Anders was offered a record contract by the same jury members of the radio contest. It was then that his career officially began when in 1980, at age of 17, he released his debut single Judy. Anders released several other singles produced by Daniel David including Du Weinst Um Ihn, which he performed on Michael Schanze show Hatten Sie Heut' Zeit Für Uns. In 1983, he met Dieter Bohlen who produced Was Macht Das Schon, the German cover version of F.R. David's Pick up the Phone and also Heisskalter Engel, the German cover version of Real Life's Send Me an Angel. From the late 1983 to the mid of 1984 Bohlen produced other tracks as well for Anders which became national hits including Wovon Träumst Du Denn (reached top 20 in Germany), Endstation Sehnsucht and Es Geht Mir Gut Heut' Nacht. The real success; however, came when in late 1984, Anders and Bohlen formed the successful duo Modern Talking, which they started things off by a world-wide hit single You're My Heart, You're My Soul.

 Solo career (1989-1997)

In 1987, Anders and Bohlen decided to terminate Modern Talking and go their separate ways due to constant quarrel between the two. This drove Dieter Bohlen to form his own project Blue System and Anders to leave Germany for U.S.. In 1989, Anders released his first English-language solo album Different with more pop style rather than dance, which he produced together with Elton John's producer Gus Dudgeon and a-ha's producer Alan Tarney. The first single Love of My Own released in the same year is considered the biggest success of his solo career.[1] The second album Whispers was released in 1991, both singles of which The Sweet Hello, The Sad Goodbye written by Roxette member Per Gessle and I Can't Give You Anything (But My Love) found themselves on a fast ascent in Germany's official single chart Media Control. In 1992, Anders released his third album Down on Sunset, the singles How Deep is Your Love and Standing Alone (duet with Glenn Medeiros) found success both in Germany and Austria. Anders released his fourth solo album When Will I See You Again (album) in 1993. The first single When Will I See You Again featured the original singers of the song, The Three Degrees. The same year Anders co-wrote Tal Vez - a big hit in Latin America for Marta Sanchez. Also, in 1993, Anders experienced something new as he got a part in a Swedish movie "Stockholm Marathon." He also wrote the title-song for that film Marathon of Life, which is one of the tracks in his 1993 When Will I See You Again album. In 1994, he came back with an album Barcos de Cristal, which he released in Spanish only and was only available in South America, this album contained songs from 1992 and 1993 albums, all redone in Spanish. Anders released one more album in 1995 called Souled, which he produced together with Peter Wolf (producer), this album contained a duet featuring The Pointer Sisters Feel For the Physical shortly after which Anders went on a long tour performing before as many as 85,000 fans, the tour involved cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Santiago de Chile, Moscow. Things for him then were quiet until the end of 1997 when Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen reunited as Modern Talking. The duo sold over 50 million albums world-wide between 1998 and 2003.

In late 2003 Anders signed a contract with BMG international as a solo artist after their final album of Modern Talking. The first single Independent Girl released in November of 2003 reached No. 17 in the German single chart, and his album This time released in 2004 entered the Top 20 as well. The second single King of Love reached the Top 20 in Spain and the Top 40 in Germany. At this point, Anders was working with his new producer Peter Ries, who previously had worked with such artists as Sandra and No Angels. In 2004, Anders received the offer from NDR to host the annual Eurovision Song Contest, 11 million viewers, who already knew Anders as a singer watched him as a TV personality. Also, in 2004, Anders was asked to record the ballad Just Dream which was to be the official anthem for the ballet "Holyday on Ice" (which later was entered in Guinness Record Book). The song can be heard during the international three-year "Holyday on Ice" tour. A year thereafter, Anders won his legal battle against Dieter Bohlen, which was due to wrongful allegations by Bohlen, written in his autobiographical book. In March 2006, Anders got involved in Eurovision Song Contest again; however, he was one of the contestants to represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 alongside with the Greek-born Vicky Leandros (Eurovision winner in 1972) and country band Texas Lightning featuring comedian Olli Dittrich. Anders did not succeed to achieve this goal, as the spectators chose the latter. Also the same year Anders left BMG and joined Edel records and released his swing-album Songs Forever. In April 2006, his The DVD-Collection arrived in stores which contained 20 videos of his solo career as well as some hits taken from Modern Talking period. Currently, Anders is working on his new solo album, which is planned to be released in 2009.

Claudia Hess and Thomas Anders

Claudia Hess was born on the 29th of April in 1972 in Koblenz. She worked as a clerk-interpreter in a big Koblenz company which built transport roads and she loved her job a lot, however she gave up her job for Thomas - now she's his clerk, travels with him in the tours, works with his papers: correspondence and documents. Thomas and Claudia met in the cafe-bistro "Faustus" in Koblenz. Claudia was together with three of her girlfriends not far from them Thomas sat. And as he says in every interview, he went up to her and said, "Hi, where are you from?". "Faustus" became the favorite cafe of both, when Claudia came there every time she "absolutely accidentally" met Thomas, and on her birthday he met her with a bunch of flowers. Then they started calling each other and they could talk for hours. Then Claudia understood that he became Prince of her dream. Of course, Claudia knew who Thomas Anders was; sometime ago she also liked Modern Talking. Her girlfriends warned her: "such man baths in champagne, he has thousand women", but Claudia ignored all those admonitions. And Thomas didn't "play" before her, he was a normal human, but not a star for her.
In the March of '98 quiet and peaceful life of a loving pair crashed. Modern Talking reunited. Before it very often Claudia was at home, cooked, together with Thomas listened to the music in the week-end, but now... Concerts, performances, photo-sessions, interviews... But the most unpleasant thing was the tours. Thomas often had to leave Germany and sometimes for a long time, and Claudia had to part with Bernd for the tour-time, because she loved her job and couldn't gave it up, though they called each other constantly, sometimes they talked for three times a day. But love to Thomas was stronger than love to her job and so now Claudia is touring together with Thomas.
Thomas avouches that they never talk about music or his career, but I personally don't believe. Otherwise, why have I seen a pendant with Back For Good picture on Claudia's neck on one of the photos?.. (see here)
Also Thomas tries to defend Claudia from the mass media, he thinks that he has his job and there're his own difficulties with the press and TV, but it doesn't worth Claudia's attention and he shouldn't pull her in .
On the 20th of February of '99 it became known that Thomas at last divorced with his first wife Nora Balling. And it's been known for a long time that he wanted to marry his beloved Claudia. Perhaps it would be a double wedding: Dieter Bohlen was going to marry his long-time girlfriend Nadja on the same day as Thomas and Claudia would. But after a divorce from Nora, Thomas declared that we shouldn't wait for their wedding in the following year and a half. Now Thomas and Dieter are awfully busy with Modern Talking, they have great counsels and plans about tours, and so Thomas won't marry in the near future. Dieter no more wants to marry Nad - it's not interesting without Thomas (and we all know Dieter is a very ingenious about his weddings).

Do you Wanna

I hear your heartbeat, heartbeat, heartbeat
Playing with my mind
Oh, I need you wrapped around me
Just like Ivy on a vine
But now I'm only lonely, lonely
Holding on to you
Oh, I need you back here with me yeah
I think you want it too
Now I feed you with a new emotion
Heal you when you cry
I'll be your loving doctor of the night

Do you wanna take me tonight
Do you wanna make me at night
Do you wanna, if you wanna,
take what you need

Do you wanna make it allright
Do you wanna heaven is tonight
Oh baby, do you wanna, if you
wanna, take what you need

I hear your heartbeat, heartbeat, heartbeat
Begging for more
Oh, I need to hear that question
Like a dancer needs the floor
And now you're only, only, only
Holding on to me
Oh, now tell me that you're coming back
One word is all I need
Now I feed you with a new emotion
Heal you when you cry
I'll be your loving doctor of the night

You're My Heart You're MySoul

Deep in my heart, there's a fire
That's a burning heart
Deep in my heart, there's desire for a start
I'm dying in emotion
It's my world in fantasy
I'm living in my, living in my dreams

You're my heart, you're my soul
I keep it shining everywhere I go
You're my heart, you're my soul
I'll be holding you forever, stay with you together

You're my heart, you're my soul
Yeah, a feeling that our love will grow
You're my heart, you're my soul
That's the only thing I really know

Let's close the door and believe my burning heart
Feeling allright, come on, open up your heart
I'll keep the candles burning
Let your body melt in mine
I'm living in my, living in my dreams

Modern Talking's History

First formed at the end of 1984 (Anders was 21), they unexpectedly became immensely popular with their standalone disco hit "You're My Heart, You're My Soul", which was then followed by "You Can Win If You Want" and "Cheri, Cheri Lady". They released two albums a year from 1985 to 1987 while also promoting their singles on television all over Europe. After splitting up in 1987, the duo reunited in 1998, at first only testing the waters with new versions of hit singles and again reaching the top of the charts unexpectedly. Bohlen and Anders split again in 2003 due to irreconcilable disagreements (they had never been friends in the first place). Thomas Anders started another solo career immediately, while Bohlen had by now begun devoting most of his time to new talents, especially those he discovered on the German edition of the TV show Pop Idol/American Idol.Modern Talking was successful in Europe, Asia, South America and some African countries. In the United Kingdom they reached the top ten only once with the song "Brother Louie" (in 1986, #4 UK). They did not feel very good about promoting their singles there due to being marketed in England as a gay group like Erasure and Culture Club. They were almost unknown in North America by mainstream standards, never appearing in the charts there, and due to lack of backing from a record company and lack of time did not go there to promote their music. Composer Dieter Bohlen employed very simple, mood-evoking lyrics and intellectually-designed, synthesizer-based music which was out of vogue in the U.S. before Modern Talking even formed. The songs before the first split were produced in a style that can be vaguely described as Euro Disco, it was influenced by German-language "Schlager" music as well as romantic English-language songs of Italian and French origin, like Gazebo's "I Like Chopin". After the 1998 reunion Bohlen produced Eurodance, as well as American-style ballads.Global sales of Modern Talking records were 120 million units, according to BMG in June 2003, and they have become the biggest-selling German music act in history, so far outselling even Frank Farian's projects Boney M and Milli Vanilli, Michael Cretu's Enigma, Sandra, the Scorpions, Snap! and Rammstein.Dieter Bohlen also worked with other artists even while Modern Talking existed, among them Chris Norman of Smokie fame whose song "Midnight Lady" (1986) remains Bohlen's most popular composition. (It was followed by the similar-sounding "Broken Heroes".) He also wrote a large number of simple disco tracks for C.C.Catch ("House of Mystic Lights") using an accelerated, less romantic sound. Some English Bohlen songs like "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" were also recorded with German lyrics by Mary Roos using the same music tracks. When Modern Talking split up in 1987, a number of tracks written for the last album were instead moved onto Dieter Bohlen's first solo album which appeared almost at the same time, among them his delightful first solo single "Sorry Little Sarah". Bohlen's solo project was called Blue System, although it was basically him and Modern Talking co-producer Luis Rodriguez. At the time, a lot of listeners couldn't get used to the voice "changing" while the music stayed similar. The success of Blue System in Germany declined after the third album which had the wrong song chosen as the second single, and Bohlen later admitted that he lost touch with developments in the music scene.Thomas Anders has kept the Modern Talking songs in his repertoire and is going in a similar direction in his solo career ("Independent Girl"). Bohlen has written two autobiographical books, one of which sold a million copies, the sequel was heavily criticised for his unfairness towards the people he worked with. He writes music but does not publish it at the moment due to having overdosed the audience in recent years. Anders recently had his first and Bohlen his fourth child. There is a big Modern Talking following in the expatriate Vietnamese community of Little Saigon (Westminster, California, U.S.).
